Background: *The Peninsular and Orient Steam Navigation Company was founded in 1822 by Brodie Willcox and Arthur Anderson and the company first opened irregular services between England, Spain and Portugal. In 1835 they were joined by ship owner Captain Richard Bourne and this allowed them to begin a more regular steamer service and the company was called the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company.

In 1837, they gained some mail contracts and in 1840 they extended their services to Alexandria, Egypt and accordingly they changed their name to, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. The company was established by Royal Charter and does not include the normal titles Pty or Ltd.

The company expanded by acquiring more mail contracts and in 1914 it took over the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISNC), which was then the largest British shipping line, owning 131 steamers. BISNC continued to trade under its own name, and was not completely absorbed into P&O until 1972. Later in 1915 it consolidated its Australian regional interests into the company MacDonald Hamilton and Co (see related patterns list below) In 1918 P&O gained a controlling interest in the Orient Line who it had partnered with on the England-Australia mail route. During the 1920’s further acquisitions followed and by the end of that decade the company had almost 500 ships.

The company sustained considerable losses in both World War loosing 85 ships in WW1 and 179 in WW2.

After WW2 the passenger market to Australia was booming with Government assisted fares and P&O addressed this by building 15 new passenger liners in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. The Australian Government ended the immigration assistance but the programme had seen almost 1 million Europeans arrive in Australia, many carried by P&O.

With the end of the Australia passenger boom the company entered the cruise market and also converted its fleet to increase cargo capacity. In 1969 P&O in cooperation with some other cargo carriers developed Overseas Container Limited (OCL) to promote the use of container cargo. In 1986 P&O acquired the interests of its partners in OCL and renamed itself P&O Containers Limited (P&OCL). P&OCL was merged with the Dutch shipping company, Nedlloyd in 1996 to form P&O Nedlloyd.

In the later part of the 20th century the company diversified into Ferry routes, construction management, resort management, exhibition and event service but in 1999 they decided to concentrate only on maritime activities but including related industries such as Ports management and Storage.
