Background: *Liverpool and London and Globe were an English insurer established in 1836, (until 1865 they were registered as "The Liverpool and London Fire and Life Insurance Company"). They started operating in Sydney in the 1850 and in 1851 they acquired the "Australian Colonial and General Life Assurance Company". There business expanded slowly from their Sydney main office and they established offices in Tasmania and Western Australia as well as Brisbane in 1911.
Device: There were two LLG devices used in Tasmania, one used at the Launceston office (this device) and another used at the Hobart office (LL/G.b). They are both found on the revenue stamps of Tasmania.
There were seven LLG devices used in the companies various offices around Australia, two 4 head devices (both in Sydney) and five single head devices. What is more one of the 4 head devices and four of the single head devices all had a similar pattern in the LL/G format. This has lead to some confusion in other studies of these patterns and much miss reporting of usage dates and locations. This Launceston device is a single head device and it is found used on Tasmanian revenue stamps as well as the postage stamps of Australia over the period 1927-1962

Device: This is the sister device to LL/G.a above and it was located in the companies Hobart office. It is a single head device and as with LL/G.a it came into service in 1927. The device is found on revenue stamps of Tasmania as well as the postage stamps of Australia from 1927 until 1945.
