Gas Suppler Address: 138 Bourke Rd, Alexandria, NSW Revenue Use: 1929-66 Numeral issue 2d, 3d Rarity Scale: 1929-66 Numeral issue 2d R4, 3d R4 Background: *In 1920 the Felton Grimwade group of companies formed the Australian Oxygen and Industrial Gases Pty Ltd, with Russell Grimwade (later Sir) as chairman. In 1935 Australian Oxygen merged with British and Sydney interests to form Commonwealth Industrial Gases Ltd. The British interests were those of the Brin’s Oxygen Company, which had been formed in the UK in 1886 but was growing into a position that would see it as a global provider of gas. Brin’s had changed their name to the British Oxygen Company (BOC) in 1906 and BOC held a 60% share in the new CIG venture. CIG became the dominant supplier in Australia of bottled gases for welding, refrigeration, fuel, medicine and many other applications across all industry sectors. GIC became a wholly owned subsidiary of BOC in 1990 and then in 1994 the parent company changed their name to BOC Gases. In 2006 the company was acquired by their long time competitors and one time partners, the German Linde Group. Device: Handstamp
