Background: *The West Australian (often simply called The West) is the only locally-edited daily newspaper published in Perth, WA and today it is owned by Seven West Media Pty Ltd.

The West Australian traces its origins back to The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal, which was first published on 5 January 1833 making it the second-oldest continuously-produced newspaper in Australia. It was originally owned and edited by the Perth Postmaster Charles MacFaull until his death in 1846 after which it was produced by his wife, Elizabeth. The paper was then taken over by Arthur Shenton and its name changed to the Perth Gazette. In June 1874 the newspaper was purchased by a syndicate who renamed it The Western Australian Times and increased production to two editions a week. In  November 1879, it was relaunched as The West Australian and in October 1883 production was increased to three editions per week and later in 1885 it became a daily publication.

In the 1920’s The West Australian was owned by the publicly-listed company West Australian Newspapers (WAN) Ltd and this continued until 1969 when WAN was taken over by the Melbourne based Herald and Weekly Times Ltd. In 1987 the paper was acquired by the Bell Group and in turn acquired by the Bond Corporation.  This ownership was short lived as the Bond Corporation soon collapsed and the paper was purchased from the creditors of Bond Corporation by a publically floated company, West Australian Newspapers Holdings. In February 2011  the company was acquired by the Seven Media Group and renamed  Seven West Media Ltd.
