The partnership business carried on by Henry Butler, JL Robert Nichol, Frederick George Sargood, and Alfred Herbert Sargood, as Warehousemen, in the Commonwealth of Australia, and in London, under the style of "SARGOOD, BUTLER, NICHOL, AND EWEN," having expired by effluxion of time, and Messrs. Henry Butler and Robert Nichol having retired from the business as from the thirty-first day of July, 1906, Messrs. Frederick George Sargood and Alfred Herbert Sargood will carry on business at the premises occupied by the late firm under the style of " Sargood Brothers," and receive and pay all monies due to and by the late firm.— Dated this 27th day of August, 1906. Background: *Royal Dutch Shell, commonly known as Shell, is a global energy company headquartered in the Netherlands and with its registered office in London. It is the second-largest energy company and the fifth-largest company in the world with operations in over 90 countries. Shell Transport and Trading Company was started in the early 1800’s by Marcus Samuel, a London antique dealer who imported sea shells from the Far East to supply the fashion and manufacturing industries. This later became a thriving import-export business run by his sons, Marcus (Jr) and Sam. In the mid 1800’s oil was largely used in lighting and lubricants but with the arrival of the internal combustion engine in the 1880’s there was increased demand for transport fuel. Building on their shipping expertise, the Samuel brothers commissioned a fleet of steamers to carry oil in bulk. This was formalised as the Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1897and it used a mussel shell as its logo. Shell Transport’s activities in the East, combined with a search for new sources of oil brought them into contact with Royal Dutch Petroleum. The two companies joined forces in 1903 to protect themselves against the growing power of the US based Standard Oil. They fully merged into the Royal Dutch Shell Group in 1907.
