Background: Mr. H. E. Coles owner of the largest sight testing firm in the Southern Hemisphere and makers of the 'Supra" lenses transferred the goodwill of his business as a gift to, 18 senior members of his executive staff. Mr. H. E. Coles, a founder of Coles & Garrard Pty. Ltd. Melbourne, retired from active management of the business. The 18 executives taking over all the assets less liabilities at a low book value. They were being charged nothing for goodwill, on which extensive advertising had been spent.

In a business of this nature the connection is the major asset. A proprietary limited company of the same name was registered to take over the existing company. It will have a nominal capital of £50.000, of which £38.000 will be issued.

Background: According to a 1927 court case involving defective butter boxes, Commercial Boxes Pty Ltd with Patrick Edward Williams as manager, existed in 1924 under another name and at an unknown address.

Commercial Boxes Pty Ltd, box manufacturer, first appears in the records in October, 1926, in Brady Street, South Melbourne, between the J. Kitchen & Sons factory and the timber wharf.

In December, 1931, a disastrous fire destroyed the boxing mill, machinery and “hundreds of thousands of feet of stacked timber” with an estimated damage bill of £20,000. Following the fire, the company reopened in nearby White Street, South Melbourne.

The business became Commercial Boxes & Plywoods Pty Ltd in mid-1937. The company ceased trading in July, 1938, when the business was taken over by Kauri Timber Co. Ltd becoming a department of that company.

Background: Daniel G. Cullen was in business as a mercantile broker he was elected to Hawthorn Council in 1882, becoming Mayor in 1887 serving on the Council for many years.

In May 1882 he was on the initial board of management of the Australian Co-operative Tobacco Factory Co. Ltd and an agent for Warrenheip Brewery, which he held for a number of years.

By June 1888 he was described as a commercial broker and a major shareholder in the new Property Building Finance and Investment Society of Australia Ltd. He moved to Williamstown in about 1890.

In early, 1923, Cullen sold 6 lots [total] 120 acres of freehold farm land [by Crown Grant] and 3 acres near the railway station in Darnum [in Gippsland] apparently reducing his business activities, he died in 1928.

Background: The business was established in 1874 and was acquired from Craig Williamson Pty. by Craig Williamson, Pty. Ltd., in April, 1926. Before the depression the turnover was £275,000 In one year. The company was a subsidiary of Marcus Clark (Victoria), Limited.

The business came to an end on 26 March 1937, Stock valued at £131,022 was bought by Anthony Hordern. Ltd., Sydney, and book debts (£55,746) by Ball and Welch Ltd. Melbourne.
