Background: The Neptune Oil Company was registered in Australia in 1905 (some sources report 1909 and 1912) but Neptune products had been sold in Australia since about 1894 by a business run by the Kitchen family. This company was purchased by the Lever Group in 1914 and their Motor spirit (petrol) went on sale in 1917 under the “Waratah” brand name. From 1924 it was progressively available in every state through multi brand service stations with the product being packaged into various sized containers from a facility in Brisbane.

In 1926 the Anglo-Dutch, Shell Company purchased the Neptune/Waratah concern and this lead to the creation of Shell Australia. It was not until 1952 that Neptune petrol became available under the “Neptune” brand with its unique 'King Neptune' logo. This was short lived as Shell dropped the name all together in 1959.
